I am thrilled about my first collaboration with the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens (EMST). They will be available in the beginning of January 2021 at the museum shop.
It has been a great wish of mine to visit this museum that is a landmark of modern architecture in Greece. Therefore, my passion for modern architecture and cyanotype process came together in this great collaboration.
In my cyanotypes, I have tried to capture the multi-faceted atmospheres of the building, so that I can showcase its unique identity and relationship with the context. The building’s orthogonal and strong shape is enhanced by the glass vertical and horizontal stripes that cut through the facade. It stands like a ship anchored at the busy avenue.
When inside, one feels like moving through a concrete skeleton. The structural elements guide the sight and the movement.
From the terrace, the view towards the Acropolis and the Lycabettus hill is breath-taking. Past and present in a symbolic dialogue.
The museum is housed at a former beer factory of the brand FIX. Named after its Bavarian founder, the factory was meant to become one of the most significant buildings of the Greek modern movement, designed by the architect Takis Zenetos in the 1960s.
A modern cathedral for contemporary Art, the enormous height of the interior and the rhythm of the square columns create the feeling of a three-dimensional concrete grid, lit from the long lines of windows of the facade. The static colonnades come in contrast to the continuous movement of the escalators. Timeless simplicity, monumental scale, a building that inspires and urges for contemplation.
The transformation of the factory into a cultural institution of international appeal has given a fresh breath that the city of Athens has longed for. Art and architecture in a contemporary marriage.
